Well it seems to be official. Canon has now officially announced the Canon 50D, the successor to the 40D. The official specs are bang on with the leaked specs from a few days ago. Canon has also announced the launch of their newest EF-S lens, an 18-200 3.5-5.6 IS EF-S super zoom. Finally, Canon hobbyists now have a first party choice for a super zoom. Interestingly enough Nikon has also officially announced the Nikon D90, the long awaited successor to the relatively old D80. Both these new cameras should help boost sales for both companies in the coming months as they both do well to bridge the gap between hobbyist enthusiasts to semi-professionals.

Canon 50D Specs:

  • 15.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 4 Processor 6.3 FPS up to 90 JPEG bursts (UDMA CF Cards) or 60 JPEG bursts and 16 RAW Bursts for standard CF Cards
  • 3.0-inch LCD
  • Enhanced Live View
  • 9 cross-type A points
  • HDMI output
  • Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System
  • New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting to automatically even the brightness across an image
